Advanced Simulation Training for St. Lawrence and Great Lakes Pilots

15 January 2026

The GLPA is entering the second year of a four-year contract for pilot proficiency training and apprentice pilot training on the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Canadian Great Lakes. The MSRC is pleased to continue this long-standing tradition, which began with the opening of the Centre in 2006.

Since then, the MSRC team of specialists has developed exercise areas covering the entire navigable system and the major ports, as well as several ship models specifically built to serve this network of canals, locks, and waterways that allows ocean-going vessels to travel up the St. Lawrence River and access the Great Lakes from the Atlantic Ocean.

We have also worked on special projects with GLPA pilots, including the arrival of Viking Expeditions–class cruise ships, the new “LakerMax” series of multipurpose heavy-lift vessels operated by Briese Schiffahrt, specifically designed to navigate the tight constraints of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway system, as well as the U.S. Navy’s newest Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship.
